Panasonic calls the Panafax UF-9000 a fax machine but its really a network monochrome laser MFP. It can connect to your network so you can print to the 600-dpi laser printer scan to your PCs from the color scanner at up to 300 pixels per inch (dpi) for color and 600 dpi for monochrome and send faxes from your PCs. It also lets you copy scan and e-mail directly from its front panel.
Like most laser-based MFPs the UF9000 consists of a laser printer and a scanner mounted on top; theres a gap between them to make room for printer output. Theres also a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) in the scanner cover. Its just right for a workgroup or small office. The front panel includes the usual array of buttons to let you fax copy and scan. A small QWERTY keyboard lets you type in e-mail addresses for the scan-to-e-mail feature.
On our tests the 19-page-per-minute (ppm) UF9000 scored well on performance turning in times that were essentially equal to the times for the 21-ppm Lexmark X422 on most tests. The only significant differences we saw were for the three Adobe Acrobat files with the UF-9000 beating the Lexmark X422 each time. The UF-9000 took between 25 and 28 seconds for each of the three files compared with 39 seconds 45 seconds and 1 minute 15 seconds for the X422.
Text quality was excellent even for a laser printer; photos were slightly better than newspaper quality; and graphics were acceptable despite obvious dithering patterns. The UF-9000 has a lot going for it. If youre looking for a network-based MFP for a workgroup or small office and youre not particularly concerned about graphic output its a great choice.
